Why did Jesus, the Master Teacher, use fiction to teach spiritual truth?
It’s doubtful we can know the whole reason.
But the account in Matthew 13
seems to suggest
that it has something to do with respecting people
wherever they’re at in their walk with God.
Jesus said the strongest of truth.
Some would hear only the earthly tale
with no spiritual understanding.
And that was okay.
Jesus respected every individual
regardless of how much or little
they could see and hear in the spirit realm.
The parable allowed him to speak to a huge group of people
and met each on an individual level,
without overwhelming them.
Fiction is an art form that allows the most intimate,
the most intense,
the deepest expressions of truth
directly from one heart to another,
(often on the subconscious level,
for both the reader and the writer).
In the coming weeks,
we’ll explore how the novel,
in its various forms,
is used shape the heart of an individual
AND a society.
Until then, you may want to read Mark 4:1-25.
Meditate on this statement of Jesus:
“Consider carefully what you hear. . .”
