Some of you have contacted me about the book launch this Saturday.
It is fun to see you as excited as I am about this event!
I know some of you live too far away to come,
but here is a reminder for those in Southern California.

Book Launching presenting
Arlene Ussery’s third novel: Joel’s Wife
and Hannah’s Promise Devotional and Discussion Guide
to be used with the novel, Hannah’s Promise
Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 10:30 AM
New Hope Community Church
3041 Peck Road, El Monte, CA 91731
Church phone: (626) 442-2554

RSVP appreciated but not required

If you live in southern California, I hope you will be able to come.
In addition to having time to visit with the author,
you’ll have the opportunity to meet others
who have enjoyed novels from the Timeless Treasures Collection.
At about 10:45 I will speak and answer questions.
Bring friends with you, especially those who like reading good novels.

For those who can’t come,
books will be up for sale on this website this weekend
so don’t feel too sad about missing the launch.
You can still read the books,
and that’s the best part after all, isn’t it?

what's on your bucket list?

Did you see the 2007 American comedy-drama film called The Bucket List?
If so, you know what a bucket list is—a list of things you want to do before you die (kick the bucket).

I’m glad Matthew Russell saw that movie and decided to make his own bucket list.
Why is his list important to me, you ask?
Well, one of his goals was to design a book cover.
Last week he held in his hands the first proof of his dream come true—Joel’s Wife,
the sequel to Hannah’s Promise.

But his holding a proof copy is not good enough—for him, or me,
or those of you who have been waiting for my next novel.
The good news is that the novel will be on sale in November of this year.
If you are one of those enthused readers who's been waiting impatiently, stir up some excitement.
Make comments about my novels, Hannah's Promise or Transformed in Bethany
to whet the appetites of others for this (I promise you!) fantastic story.
In a few days, I'll let you read what is written on the back cover of Joel’s Wife.

Until then here's a verse for you.

Commit to the LORD whatever you do,
and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:3 NIV

STORIES QUIET THE TORMENTED SOUL

11/3/2011

In mid-October I hosted a luncheon
to connect with leaders in the LA area.
We had a great time.
It was affirming to see their attentive receptiveness
to the message the Lord has given me
about the transforming power of stories.
(Of course, I was delighted, too,
that each of those who had never read my novels
purchased both my books.
Nothing convinces people of their value like reading them!)

About two weeks after the event,
I contacted one attendee, a chaplain from a large medical group.
He hadn’t had a chance to start reading either of the books,
but he was excited to tell me what happened
in several instances where the Lord prompted him to tell stories,
reminding him of what I had said about their exceptional power.

“Since the luncheon,” he said,
I encountered three separate men in emergency
who were extremely angry, highly violent.
One even threw urine at the nurse.
All three had to be restrained and the police called.
When I entered the room, I asked,
‘Can I tell you a story?’
In all three situations, the men were willing to listen.

“I told them a story I usually pass out in printed form,
a story I found on the internet in 2005.
‘A Native American grandfather once told his two grandchildren a story.
“There are two wolves fighting inside you,” he said.
“One is kind and cares about others.  The other is hateful and violent.”
One of the children asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?”
“The one you feed,” he answered.’

“After hearing the story,
all three men became calm
and were able to have their restraints removed,”
the chaplain told me.

Wow!
What would happen if all of us used stories more often,
more effectively?

I would appreciate your prayers
as I endeavor to share what the Lord has been teaching me
about this underused key in changing lives.
If you know of a group who would be interested
in having me come to speak about this,
contact me at the tab at the top of this page.

In the mean time, follow Jesus’ example and tell stories!

"Jesus . . . never said anything to them without using a story.”
Matthew 13:34   (Ussery Paraphrase)
